Explore our historySpectronic began with radio and television repairs. Understanding how electronics worked soon became a drive to create something new. Founded by Per Siversson in Helsingborg, the company grew from a service business into a developer and manufacturer of its own technology.
A handheld device for selective calling over two-way radio helped users reach a specific receiver. It marked an early step into purpose-built communications equipment, bringing circuit design and practical product development together.
Spectronic developed and manufactured a distinctive series of mobile phones that brought data communication directly into the handset. Alongside voice calls, users could exchange information on the move—an early step towards the connected devices we now take for granted.
This engineering work earned founder Per Siversson the Polhem Prize in 1992 and the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences’ Gold Medal in 1995.
At CeBIT in 1999, Spectronic gave the first public demonstration of a mobile phone with a built-in camera. The GSM handset combined a large screen, web browsing and imaging in a handheld device.
Its distinctive Sidetouch interface replaced the physical keypad with touch-sensitive controls along the sides, leaving the front free for the screen. The phone put an ambitious idea into practice: mobile communication could be visual, interactive and much more than voice.
Spectronic brought image analysis and AI into radiotherapy. MRI Planner generates synthetic CT images from MRI, providing data for radiation dose planning. GRADE combines a geometric phantom with analysis software to check the geometric accuracy of MRI images.
Supported by peer-reviewed research, these products are used worldwide and have supported treatment for tens of thousands of patients. Spectronic Medical was also recognised on Sweden’s 33-list of promising young technology companies. The medical business now operates as a separate, independent company.
Today, Spectronic combines acoustic sensing, vibration measurement and machine learning to understand how industrial equipment behaves. By learning a machine’s operating patterns, the sensor platform can detect anomalies and help diagnose developing faults.
